In 1959 the museum moved into the Zhonghui Building. The museum has a collection of over 120,000 pieces, including bronze, ceramics, calligraphy, furniture, jades, ancient coins, paintings, seals, sculptures, minority art and foreign art. The Shanghai Museum houses several items of national importance, including one of three extant specimens of a &#8220;transparent&#8221; bronze mirror from the Han Dynasty.

<p>De Tang-dynastie staat bekend voor zijn enorme rijkdom. Deze belangrijke periode wordt niet voor niets bestempeld als ‘De gouden eeuw’. Een belangrijk element dat aan de basis ligt van de grote rijkdom is de Zijderoute, die opgestart werd tijdens de Han-dynastie. Dankzij de Zijderoute kwam de oosterse cultuur in contact met de westerse cultuur en konden goede en lucratieve handelscontacten worden uitgebouwd. De weerspiegeling van de enorme welvaart kan men terugvinden in de prachtige materiële cultuur die ontwikkeld werd tijdens de Tang-dynastie.</p>
<p>Hierin kan men verschillende thema’s onderscheiden die in de tentoonstelling belicht worden:</p>
<ul>
<li>Sociale componenten: vrouwen en mannen  culturele componenten: handelaren, handel en productie,<br />
sport en beweging</li>
<li>Boeddhisme, mystiek, kunst en literatuur</li>
<li> De wereldstad Chang’an</li>
